Marco Leathers

Marco Leathers is right in the middle of Periamet on Wuthucattan Street. If you know Periamet, you know it is the place to be for leather, but it is also incredibly crowded. Our shop at number 40 is usually packed to the ceiling with finished goods and raw skins. There is barely enough room to walk sometimes. We have been here for a long time, and the building shows its age, but it’s sturdy. The street is so narrow that when a delivery truck comes, everything else has to stop. We are used to the shouting of the loaders and the bells of the cycles going by. Inside, it’s mostly me and a few workers who have become like family. We don't have air conditioning, just a few old ceiling fans that whir all day long. We spend most of our time grading leather or talking to people who walk in off the street looking for specific materials. It is a very hands-on kind of life. There is always a layer of dust on the shelves, and we use old ledgers to keep track of most things because it is just easier. We don't have a website or any of that stuff. People just know where we are. We have been through good times and bad times in this spot, but we just keep showing up every morning, opening the shutters, and getting to work.
