Pattern Makers For Dress is located at number seven on Gandhi Street in Shakthi Nagar, Ragunathapuram, Mangadu. It’s a small operation. We spend most of our time drawing and cutting out patterns on large sheets of paper. We have these massive wooden tables that take up most of the room. It’s a bit of a tight squeeze to move around when there are three or four of us working. We use a lot of different tools like rulers, curves, and heavy shears. The floor is almost always littered with paper clippings and chalk dust. It’s a quiet street for the most part, which helps us concentrate. We don't have a storefront, just a door with our name on it. Most of our work comes from local tailors or small garment makers who need specific designs turned into templates. We’ve been doing this for years, so we can usually tell what a pattern will look like just by glancing at the sketches. We don't have computers for the designing part; we still do it all by hand. It’s more reliable that way for us. The overhead fan keeps the air moving, but it’s still quite warm in the afternoons. We usually take a break around four for some tea and biscuits. It’s a steady job and we enjoy the craft of it. We don't need much more than our tools and some good paper.
