I work out of Ramana Flats on Mettukalani Street here in Adabakkam. My days are usually spent going from one building to another to check on pumps, wiring, or general plumbing issues. In a place like Chennai-88, things tend to rust or wear out pretty fast because of the salt in the air. I’ve been doing this for a long time, so I know which pipes are likely to leak and which motors are going to give trouble when the monsoon starts. It’s a one-man show mostly, though I have a few contacts I call if a job needs more hands. My phone is usually ringing with someone from the nearby streets needing a quick fix. I keep my tools organized, but my workspace at home is usually a bit of a mess with spare parts. It’s a lot of walking and climbing stairs, which keeps me active I suppose. People know me in the area, so I don't really have to go looking for work. I just show up, see what’s broken, and try to get it back in order as quickly as I can. It’s not glamorous, and my hands are rarely clean, but it’s good to be useful to the neighbors. If I'm not at a job, you can usually find me at the tea shop at the corner of the street. I have lived in this same neighborhood for years so I know how things work.
