Our workshop is located on Otrai Vaadai Street in Ammayarkuppam. It’s a small town, so everyone kind of knows where number 681 is. We focus on power systems here. It’s a lot of heavy equipment and metal parts. The floor is concrete and usually has some grease marks on it from the machines. We don’t have an air-conditioned office or anything like that. We just open the big doors to let the breeze in. It gets quite hot in the summer months. Most of the staff comes from the surrounding villages. We start early in the morning before the sun gets too high. There is a lot of manual work involved, lifting things and checking connections. We aren’t into the whole corporate culture thing. We just talk plainly and do the work that’s assigned for the day. Sometimes the parts we need take a while to arrive from the city, which can be frustrating. We spend a lot of time maintaining the tools we use. It’s an honest way to make a living. You won’t find a website or anything fancy from us. We mostly deal with people we’ve known for years. The street outside is narrow, so big trucks have a hard time turning around. We just make do with the space we have. It’s a simple operation, but we stay busy enough.
