Akshaya Clothing

You can find us over at No. 1 / 173 on the second floor of the Sri Danalakshmi Complex. We are right upstairs from the Lakshmivilas Bank in Karanodai. It is a bit of a climb up the stairs, but it gets us away from the street noise a little bit. Akshaya Clothing is a simple setup. We have rows of racks and a few cutting tables where we spend the bulk of our day. The light in the complex is pretty good in the morning, which helps when we are looking at different shades of fabric. We don’t have many employees, just a small team that knows how to handle the scissors and the sewing machines. Sometimes the bank downstairs gets really crowded, and we can hear the bustle from up here. We spend a lot of time double-checking the measurements on the garments because mistakes happen if you rush. It is not a corporate office with air conditioning and fancy chairs. We use wooden stools and metal tables that have seen a lot of use over the years. Our neighbors in the complex are mostly other small shops, so it’s a friendly enough place to work. We usually have the radio playing in the background while we pack the shirts and pants into plastic bags. It keeps the energy up during the long shifts when we have a big deadline to meet for a local buyer. Sometimes we even share tea with the guys from the bank downstairs.
