Broadway is a place that never really sleeps, and we’ve seen it change a lot from our spot at Jai Hind Leather Products. Our address used to be Old No. 185, but now it’s officially No. 88. That happens a lot around here and it can be a bit confusing for new delivery drivers. The smell of leather is the first thing you notice when you step inside. It’s a heavy, earthy scent that stays on your clothes all day. We have various types of leather goods stacked up on the wooden racks. Some of the shelves are quite old and have been here since the shop first opened. It’s a bit dark in the back, so we use torches sometimes to find specific skins. The street outside is always full of lorries and people pushing handcarts, so the noise is constant. We’re used to it though. We don’t have any fancy displays or bright lights. It’s just a place where leather gets handled and sold. My hands are usually a bit stained from the dyes by the end of the shift. We sit on old stools and chat while we work on the orders. It’s a very straightforward business. No big marketing stuff, just people who know about leather coming in to see what we have. Sometimes we close a bit early if the rain gets too heavy and floods the street. It is just a part of working in Broadway.
