Habeeb Tanning Company

Being over at No. 3/2 Jamalia Nagar means we are right near the Perambur High Road, so the traffic noise is just a part of the background here. Habeeb Tanning Company is basically a place where work comes first and appearances come last. Tanning is a wet, messy business and there’s no way around that. We spend our hours dealing with the hides, the vats, and the drying process. It gets hot, especially during the summer months when the air just feels heavy. Our space isn't huge, but we make it work by staying organized. Lots of people pass by on that high road, but inside here, you mostly just hear the machines humming and us talking over the noise. Some days the smells are stronger than others, depending on what we are processing. It’s a job that requires you to be on your feet all day. We don't use fancy titles or have big meetings. We just look at what needs to be tanned and we get to it. The floor is usually a bit damp and the walls have seen better days. It’s just how a tanning yard is. We’ve stayed here because it’s a good spot for transport. Every evening we clean up and get ready to do it all again tomorrow. It’s honest work, even if it’s a bit grueling at times. We don't have much to say about ourselves other than we show up and do the work.
