Gulnaz Leather & Uppers

If you walk down No. 10 Kumarappa Street in Periamet, you will probably smell the leather before you see us. Gulnaz Leather & Uppers is right in the middle of all that activity. We have stacks of leather hides piled up against the walls. Some are thick and some are thin, and they all have that distinct scent that sticks to your clothes. We spend most of the day cutting and shaping uppers on the big wooden tables. The knives have to be kept sharp, so there is always a sharpening stone nearby. It is a noisy street with lots of carts and people moving goods back and forth. Inside, it is a bit quieter, but we have the sound of the stitching machines going. We have been on Kumarappa Street for years, and we know all the other leather workers around here. We share tools sometimes or help each other out with a big order. The light isn't the best in the back of the shop, so we have a few extra lamps hanging from the ceiling. Our hands are always a bit stained from the dyes we use. It is a tiring job, standing on your feet all day, but it is what we have always done. We close up when the sun goes down and start all over again the next morning. It is a steady life here.
