Fial Tanning Company

Purasawakkam is an old part of Chennai that has a lot of history in its streets. We are located at 58 Ponnappa Street. Fial Tanning Company has been a part of this neighborhood for quite a long time. The street itself is narrow and it can get very crowded with motorbikes and people walking by. Our building is nothing special to look at from the outside, but inside we are always busy with work. We work with raw hides and turn them into something that people can actually use. It is a slow process that takes a lot of patience and you cannot really rush it. We have these big vats and wooden drums that have been running for years. The high humidity in Chennai makes the work feel a bit heavier on some days. We drink plenty of water and keep the ceiling fans going to stay cool. Our workers are experts at spotting any flaws in a skin just by looking at it. They can run their hand over the surface and tell you if it is good quality or not. We do not have a big corporate structure or managers in suits. If something needs to be done, the nearest person just does it. We keep our costs low so we can focus on the leather. The gates stay open for the breeze. It is just a local way of living.
