Being at 29 College Road means we are right in the thick of things in Nungambakkam. It’s a central spot, which is handy, but the noise from the street never really stops. Eastern Chrome Tanning Corporation Pvt. Ltd. has been operating out of this building for quite a while now. We have a routine that hasn't changed much over the decades. The morning starts with opening up the heavy doors and checking what came in overnight. It’s a lot of physical labor, moving hides and managing the vats. The chemicals have a strong scent, but after a few years, you don't even notice it anymore. We aren't really the type to have a website with fancy photos. Most of our business comes from people who have known us for thirty years. We sit in the office, handle the phone calls, and keep the ledgers updated. It’s a bit old-fashioned, maybe, but it works for us. When the monsoon hits, we have to be careful about the roof leaks, but we’ve patched them up enough times to know the trouble spots. It’s a group of about twelve of us here regularly. We talk about the local news while we work and maybe complain about the heat. It’s a real job with real people. We don't spend time writing out big plans for the future; we just try to get the current batches finished and out the door on time. We take it one shipment at a time.
