Living and working around George Town in Chennai is something else. My place, Dhathandesi, is over at 38 Chinnathambi St. If you’ve ever walked through these streets, you know how narrow they are and how much stuff is happening at every corner. It’s 600001, right in the heart of the old city. I’ve been here long enough to see the buildings change, though some of them look exactly like they did twenty years ago. My space is just a regular setup, nothing too shiny. We don't have a big glass front or anything, just a door that stays open most of the day. The noise from the street comes in, people shouting, bikes zooming past, but that’s just George Town for you. It feels real. Sometimes I think about moving to a quieter part of Chennai, but then I’d miss the morning coffee from the place around the corner. It’s a bit of a maze getting here if you’re not used to the area. I tell people to look for the landmark shops nearby. It’s not about having a polished look, it’s about being here and being available. The walls could use a fresh coat of paint maybe, but the work happens regardless. I spend most of my time at the desk. It gets hot in the afternoons, but the fan keeps things moving. It’s a simple life on Chinnathambi St and I like it that way. No big goals or fancy promises, just me being here every day.
