A. P. S Tanners

Down here at No. 6/ A Angalamman Koil Street Nagelkeni, the work is mostly about the leather. It is not a clean job, but it is what we do at A. P. S Tanners. The smell of the hides is something you get used to after the first week, and now we don’t even notice it anymore. Nagelkeni is full of places like ours, so there is always a lot of movement on the street. We spend most of our time dealing with the raw materials. It takes a lot of water and a lot of patience. Some days are hotter than others, and the fans in the back don't do much, but we keep moving. We have a few old machines that have been with us for years. They make a lot of noise, but they still work fine if you treat them right. We don't spend much time in the front office because the real work is in the back. Usually, the floor is wet and there are scraps of leather everywhere. We clear it out at the end of every day, but by the next morning, it looks the same again. Angalamman Koil Street is busy in the evenings with people going to the temple. We usually finish up around then. It’s a simple setup, just honest work with our hands, trying to get the batches right before they go to the next stage. It is hard work, but it is steady.
