About Venus Handicrafts – Art & Craft in Central Delhi
If you know Darya Ganj, you know how tight the streets can get. We are at 1952, right on Bara Dri Street in Kucha Chellan. It’s one of those old spots where the buildings are all leaned up against each other. Finding Venus Handicrafts isn’t always easy if it's your first time walking through these lanes. There is a lot of history in the walls here, and you can feel it when you walk up the stairs. We have all sorts of handcrafted items tucked into corners and sitting on old wooden shelves. The lighting isn't the best, but we know where everything is kept. Usually, the morning starts with sweeping the front and making sure the narrow walkway is clear for people to pass by. It gets very crowded in the afternoons with the rickshaws and the delivery guys pushing carts. We spend a lot of time just wrapping things in newspaper and bubble wrap so they don't get chipped. The sounds of the street come right through the windows—people shouting, horns honking, and the general hum of the city. It is a small space, and it gets a bit cramped when we have a lot of new stock coming in from the artisans. We don't really bother with much decoration ourselves. The items we have are the decoration. It’s a simple life here in the heart of the old city, just doing the daily work as it comes.
