About Nigam Handicrafts – Art & Craft in Central Delhi
Our workshop, Nigam Handicrafts, is at 1025 Gali Shakti Mandir in Daryaganj. We are right by Tiraha Behram Khan, which is a very active part of this old district. The lane is usually crowded with people and the smell of local food from the stalls nearby. We spend our days here working on various handicraft items. It is a lot of manual labor, using our hands and simple tools to get things finished. The building is old and has a lot of character, though the stairs can be a bit steep if you are not careful. We have shelves lining the walls, filled with different pieces we have made or are currently working on. It is a bit dusty because of all the materials we use, but we try to sweep up every evening. Working in Daryaganj means being part of the history of the city. Everything here feels like it has been around for a century. We aren't a big factory; it is more of a small group of us who know the craft. We don't use big machines that make a lot of noise. It is mostly the sound of small tools and us talking while we work. People sometimes wander in thinking we are a shop, but we are mostly just focused on making the items. It is a busy life, but it is what we know. We stay here until the evening light fades away.
