Our office is located at No.37 on M N Krishna Rao Road, right by the Lalbagh West Gate. Baswangudi is one of those parts of Bangalore that still feels like the old days, and we like that. Sylvan Coffee Company is not a new startup with bean bags and glass walls. We have heavy wooden desks and old metal filing cabinets. We have been focusing on the coffee trade for quite some time now. The area is always green because of the park nearby, which makes the walk to the office quite pleasant in the mornings. We handle the sourcing of beans and the distribution side of the business. It involves a lot of talking to farmers and checking on the roasting process at the unit. We do not have a marketing department to speak of. We just have people who know what a good cup of coffee should taste like. Sometimes we just sit around the table and try different blends to see what is working. It is a slow process, not something you can just rush with a computer program. The building we are in has been around for ages and it has high ceilings that keep us cool. We get a lot of locals dropping by just to say hello or to ask about the latest harvest. We keep things pretty informal here. If the phone rings, whoever is free picks it up. We are not trying to change the world, we are just trying to provide decent coffee to people who appreciate it.
