We are up on Kodagu Road. It’s 201/4 if you’re looking for the exact spot. Being in this area means we are close to where the beans actually grow. We spend a lot of time looking at green coffee beans and sorting them. The roasting machine is the heart of the place. It’s big, heavy, and makes a lot of noise when it’s spinning. We have to watch the temperature carefully so we don't burn anything. The smell of roasting coffee is everywhere, it even gets into our clothes. We aren't a fancy cafe where you sit and drink; we are more about the process of getting the beans ready. There are sacks of coffee stacked up against the walls. It’s a bit of a warehouse feel. Sometimes the rains in Kodagu make things damp, so we have to be careful with storage. We are a small team and we do everything ourselves, from moving the heavy bags to packing the finished coffee. We don't have a big marketing team. We just talk to the local growers and do our work. It’s a lot of physical labor and the hours can be long during the harvest season. We just enjoy the smell and the sound of the beans cracking in the heat. It’s honest work on the road. We end the day by sweeping up the husks.
