N S Provisions

Akkipet is a very crowded place, and that is where you will find us on SM Lane. Our shop is at number 10. It is a narrow street where you have to watch out for handcarts and people carrying big loads on their heads. We sell provisions, so the shop is full of sacks of rice, pulses, and different kinds of spices. You can smell the mixture of everything as soon as you walk in. It is a bit dark inside because the buildings are so close together, but we have our regular lights. We spend the day weighing out items for customers who live nearby or other small shopkeepers. There is always a lot of shouting and noise from the lane outside. We have been in this spot for a long time. The floor is old and the wooden counters are worn down from years of bags being dragged across them. We start early to get the stock in before the lanes get too blocked up with the day's traffic. It is hard work, lifting heavy bags and staying on your feet, but it is what we do. We don't have a computer system or anything like that; we just use a ledger and a calculator. It is a simple way of doing things that works for this part of the city. We have a cat that hangs around to keep the rats away from the grain sacks. The ceiling is high but the space is filled up right to the top with boxes.
