Akhand Diyas

We spend most of our time here in Kundalahalli working with clay and making oil lamps. It gets quite dusty in the workshop, especially when the fans are running during the hotter months to keep us cool while we work. We started Akhand Diyas because it was what we knew how to do with our hands. Most mornings begin with checking the stock and seeing what needs to be fired in the kiln. There is always a lot of cleaning up to do at the end of the day. The floors are usually covered in bits of dried mud and dust. People come by the shop when they need something for their homes or for a specific occasion they are planning. We don't have a big fancy showroom, just the space where we work and some wooden shelves for the finished pieces. Sometimes the clay doesn't dry right if it’s raining outside, which can be a bit of a headache for our production schedule. We just keep at it though. It’s quiet work for the most part, except for the noise from the traffic on the street outside. We’ve been in this spot for a while now and the neighbors know us. It’s not a complicated setup. We just make the diyas, pack them up, and make sure they get to where they are supposed to go. You can usually find one of us here from early morning until the sun goes down. It’s just how the days go by for us.
