Just Jute Products

Just Jute Products is out in Cauverypura, Kamakshipalya. Specifically, we are at 43, Ward No.36, on the 1st Main and 7th Cross. The smell of raw jute is the first thing you notice when you walk in. It’s an earthy, dry smell that stays on your clothes even after you go home. The floor is usually covered in little fibers that are impossible to sweep up completely, no matter how much we try. We have several sewing machines going at once, so the noise is constant. It’s a rhythmic thumping that sounds like a heartbeat after a while. Most of us have calluses on our fingers from handling the rough material. It’s not the easiest work, but it’s what we know. The space is crowded with rolls of fabric and finished bags waiting to be moved out. We don't have air conditioning, just a few big pedestal fans that mostly just move the dust around. People in the neighborhood know us by the sound of the shutters opening in the morning. We don't put on any acts for visitors. What you see is exactly how we work every day. The tea guy comes by at eleven and four, which is the highlight of the day for most of the crew. We make things that are meant to be used, not just looked at. It’s basic, hard work in a busy part of town. That’s just how it is.
