Hangyo

We are over in Benniganahalli at units 1 and 2. It’s mostly just a lot of freezers humming all day and night. The electricity bill is always something we worry about because if the power stays off too long, we are in real trouble. We spend most of our time in heavy jackets because even though it's hot outside in Bangalore, it's freezing inside where we keep the stock. We have to be really quick when we open the doors to move boxes so the cold air doesn't escape. It's a lot of counting and checking temperatures on the gauges. The units are tucked away a bit, so it's not like a shop where people just wander in off the street. Most of our work is dealing with the delivery vans that come to pick up orders. It’s a lot of lifting cold boxes that stick to your skin if you don't wear gloves. Sometimes the ice builds up on the floors and we have to scrape it off so nobody slips. It is a quiet kind of work compared to a market, but it’s still busy. We keep our records on a clipboard hanging by the door. It’s a straightforward job, just keeping things frozen and getting them out on time. The traffic around Benniganahalli can be a nightmare in the evenings when we are trying to close up and go home to get warm.
