If you are looking for Prithvi Silk Creations, you have to head into the middle of Chickpet. We are on the second floor of Shanti Bhavan, which is No. 64 on A. M. Lane. It’s right near the Avenue Road Circle, so it’s right in the middle of all the chaos of the city. Finding us can be a bit tricky the first time because the lanes are so narrow and everyone is pushing past each other. But once you get up to the second floor, it’s a bit quieter than the street. We deal mostly with silk, and the shop is filled with the smell of the fabric and old wood. I took over this spot from my uncle, and I’ve kept things mostly the same as they were. We have stacks of sarees and fabric rolls that reach almost to the ceiling. Sometimes I worry the shelves might give way, but they’ve held up for twenty years so far. We don’t do any fancy promotions or have a big sign outside. People usually come to us because their families have been buying from us for generations. It’s a bit dusty, and the stairs are steep, but that’s just how these old buildings are. We sit on the floor on white cushions most of the day while showing the stock to customers. It’s a slow process sometimes, but that’s the way silk should be handled. We just stay busy.
