It’s a struggle just to walk sometimes, but we’ve been here in the middle of it all for a long time. Our shop is old and has that specific smell of silk and dust that stays with you. We don't have air conditioning, just a few ceiling fans that hum all day long. I sit near the entrance most of the time to greet people. People just know we are here and they come back. My father ran this place before me, and not much has changed since he was in charge. The wooden counters are worn down from years of use. We talk to everyone who comes in, even if they are just looking. It’s a community feeling. Sometimes the power goes out, and we just light a few candles and keep talking to the customers. It’s just how things work on Avenue Road. You get used to the noise of the carts and the shouting outside. We just keep our stock ready and do things the old way.
