We're out in Wadwani, based at Gandhari Sakharam Dive’s house, number 4412. It’s a regular home where we’ve set aside a bit of space for company business. Beed can be a hard place to farm when the rains don’t come on time. We grouped together as Shree Makaradhwaj Farmer Producer Company Limited because it’s easier to handle the market when you aren't alone. Our days are mostly spent in the dirt, checking on the growth and worrying about pests. When the sun starts to go down, we head over to the house to talk things over. It’s a bit crowded sometimes, especially when more than five of us are in the room. We don't have fancy office chairs or air conditioning. Usually, we just sit on the floor or on some plastic stools. We handle the grains and sometimes cotton depending on the year. Sakharam's porch is where we spend a lot of time watching the horizon for clouds. It’s a simple life out here. We didn't have much of a choice but to group together. The costs were just getting too high for one person to manage. We share the tractor when we can. Sometimes the paperwork is late, but we don't stress about it too much. We just keep our heads down and work the rows. If someone is sick, another person steps in to help.
