If you take the road out to Khadkat, you’ll find Ashti Shetkari Producer Company Limited. We are based at Gat No. 376, right on the Ashti Road. It’s Digambar Maruti Udmane’s place, and it’s where we all gather when we aren't out in the fields. Ashti is a quiet place for the most part, but the work we do is anything but quiet. There is always a tractor running or someone shouting across the field. We started this because we were tired of working so hard and having nothing to show for it. By putting our names together under one company, we feel a bit more secure. It’s a lot of manual labor, and our hands are usually stained with soil or grease. We don't use any of those big words you hear on the news. We talk about the price of seeds, the state of the well, and who is going to help with the loading tomorrow. Sometimes we meet up late in the evening after everyone is done with their chores. The office is just a place for us to keep our records and have a cup of tea while we plan for next month. We aren't trying to change the world, we just want to make sure the farmers in this part of Khadkat get a fair shake. It’s honest work, and we are just trying to keep our heads above water like everyone else around here.
