NORTON ENGG. WORKS is tucked away in that little street right across from the Canara Bank on G.T. Road. If you aren't looking closely, you might miss the turnoff, but once you get inside the street, you’ll hear us working. It’s a tight spot, especially when we have big pieces of metal coming in or going out. The traffic on G.T. Road is always a mess, so we prefer being back here where it’s just a bit quieter, though the shop itself is never really silent. We do a lot of the heavy lifting ourselves. There are a few of us who have been here since the beginning. The walls have some old calendars and layers of dust that we don't bother much with. We are more concerned with the lathes and the drilling. Sometimes the light in the back of the shop isn't great, so we move closer to the front door to see what we are doing. It’s just how we work. We don't have a receptionist or anything like that. If someone walks in, one of us wipes our hands on a rag and goes to see what they need. It’s simple engineering work, day in and day out. We take our breaks when we can, usually sitting on some old crates near the entrance and watching the delivery trucks go by. It’s been our home for a long time, and we know almost everyone on this narrow street. We just try to keep things moving.
