Sgh Adarsh School

Sgh Adarsh School is tucked away on Guru Ki Wadali Road in the Chheharta area of Amritsar. It is a part of town that has a lot of history and the people here are mostly working class. The school looks like many others in this part of Punjab. We have the main gate where the rickshaws drop off the kids in the morning. You can hear the morning prayer echoing through the neighborhood if the wind is blowing the right way. The classrooms are simple with wooden benches that have seen many years of use. We don't have a massive playground but there is enough room for the kids to stand for assembly and play during the break. Teachers here often live nearby so they know the families well. It is common to see a teacher talking to a parent on the street after school hours. During the winter the mist hangs over the road and the kids come wrapped in heavy sweaters and scarves. In the afternoons when school lets out the whole road gets filled with blue or grey uniforms. It is just a local school where we try to teach the basics and make sure the children stay on the right path. No one is putting on an act here. We just show up and do the work of schooling every single day because that is what is needed.
