Majith Mandi is where you will find us. It is one of those old-fashioned markets where the streets are narrow and the buildings are packed together. Krishan Baldev & Co. has been operating out of this spot for as long as I can remember. The office is more like a room filled with ledgers and old wooden boxes. We deal in spices and other goods that come through the mandi. The smell here is amazing—you can always catch a scent of cardamom or cloves in the air. We don't have any air conditioning, so we keep the doors open and use big ceiling fans to stay cool in the summer. It’s a loud place with people shouting prices and porters carrying heavy bags on their backs. We know most of the other shopkeepers around here. We spend our days checking the arrivals and making sure the quality is what it should be. Our customers are mostly regulars who have been buying from us for decades. We don't do any big advertising. Word of mouth is how we have always done things. Sometimes we sit on the floor on cushions if there are a lot of us meeting to discuss a deal. It is just the way things are done in Majith Mandi. We keep our records in thick books with red covers. It might seem old-fashioned to some, but it works for us and we see no reason to change it. Every day is different here and that is how we like it.
