If you ever find yourself at Goal Hatti Chowk, you’ll probably see our sign for Gulzar Mal And Sons. We are tucked away in Katra Kanhaiya, which is one of those old-school market areas that stays busy from morning till night. The shop has been in the family for a long time, and you can tell by the way the floorboards creak and how much stuff we have crammed onto the shelves. It’s a bit of a squeeze when more than a few people come in at once, but that’s just the charm of being in an old chowk. We don't use a lot of fancy computers for everything; a lot of things are still written down in ledgers because that’s how we’ve always done it. The smell of the market, with all the food and the people, is always there. We spend the day talking to customers, many of whom have been coming to us for years. Sometimes we just sit on the stools outside and watch the crowd go by while waiting for the next person to walk in. It’s a loud, lively place to work. There’s always someone shouting across the street or a rickshaw bell ringing. We don't try to be anything we aren't. We’re just a family business in a busy part of town, doing what we know how to do best. We usually stay open until the market starts to empty out in the late evening, which is when things finally get a bit peaceful.
