Our shop is number 89 on the road that goes from the Airport to Naroda. It’s a noisy area because of all the trucks and cars heading toward the city, and we are right opposite the Ram Krishna Tripathi School. You can hear the kids playing during their lunch break while we are inside grinding spices. The air in the shop is always thick with the smell of turmeric and chili powder. It makes you sneeze if you aren't careful. We’ve been at this location in Naroda for quite a few years now. The walls are a bit stained from the spice dust, but that’s just how a masala business looks. We spend our mornings cleaning the raw materials and the afternoons running the machines. It gets quite loud when the grinders are going. People from the neighborhood stop by because they know where we are, right across from the school gate. We don't do much advertising; the smell of the roasted cumin usually tells people we are open for the day. It’s a family-run thing, so there’s always someone drinking tea in the back while another person weighs out the packets. We try to keep things moving so we can finish before the evening rush on the main road. It’s hard work, especially in the summer heat, but it’s what we know how to do. We just focus on getting the mix right and making sure the jars are full for the people who visit us.
