M. Leather Bags is tucked away at F-615 A in Indra Enclave Phase II, right near the Mubarakpur Road in Nangloi. It’s a neighborhood where everyone seems to be making something. Our shop is small and smells strongly of tanned leather and glue. If you walk inside, you’ll hear the constant tapping of hammers and the whirring of old sewing machines. We have about four people working here most days. We started out making simple repairs for neighbors and then slowly moved into making our own bags. We don't have a big storefront with glass windows. It is more of a workshop where we also happen to sell things. There are piles of leather scraps in the corners and thread spools everywhere. Sometimes the power cuts out and we have to work by the light from the door. It’s not a perfect setup, but it’s what we have. We don't use fancy machines for everything; a lot of it is still done by hand because that’s how we learned. We aren't trying to be a famous brand. We just like the feeling of finishing a bag and knowing it’s going to last a long time. It’s a quiet life here in Nangloi, just doing our work and trying to make enough to keep the shop running for another year. We just keep sewing and hope for the best for the business and the people here.
