We operate out of Yashwant Devram Jagdale’s place at number 1223 in Rui Chhattishi. It’s a small community where people still stop to talk on the street. We’ve been working on ways to grow our crops without using so many chemicals. It’s slower and sometimes we lose more to bugs, but the soil stays healthier that way for the future. We aren't scientists, just guys who noticed the ground getting tired and dry. So we changed how we do things. We spend a lot of time making our own compost and checking the roots of the plants. It's a lot of bending over and getting your hands dirty in the sun. We meet up at Yashwant’s to discuss which fields are doing well and which ones need a break for a season. The paperwork is the hardest part for us, we'd all much rather be outside. Sometimes the kids help out after school, picking weeds or carrying smaller bags. It’s a family thing for most of us here. We have a few old sheds for storing the tools and the seeds. Everything is a bit worn out and rusted but it still works well enough. We don't have a big sign out front or anything. People just know where we are. We try to keep things simple. If the crop is good, we are happy. If the weather is bad, we just wait it out. That's the life of a farmer in Rui Chhattishi. We just keep trying to do things a bit better each year.
