Out here at Samney Ghat, the air feels a bit different because of the river being so close to the yard. Vidisha Fly Ash Bricks Private Limited is located on Arazi No. 139/2 in Nagawa. It’s a busy part of Varanasi but being near the ghat gives it a certain rhythm that you get used to. We spend our days making bricks out of fly ash, which is a messy process but someone has to do it for the new buildings. There are piles of materials everywhere and the machines make a steady thumping sound all morning. The ground is usually grey from the ash and we all wear boots that have seen better days. It is hot work, especially when the sun is reflecting off the stacks of finished bricks in the yard. We have trucks coming in and out to pick up loads for local construction sites. Sometimes the road down to the ghat gets blocked up with people and we have to wait a while to get the trucks moving. We don't have a fancy office, just a small shed where we keep the records and take a break. Most of the people working here live nearby and we’ve all been doing this for a while now. The bricks are heavy and stacking them takes a lot of time and effort. We just focus on keeping the machine running and the yard moving along. It’s a plain and simple business here.
