Growing cauliflower is what most of us do around here in Tatina Sani and Zahidpur. It’s hard work because the crop is sensitive and if the weather turns bad, you lose the whole lot. Ratan Singh has been a big part of getting us organized under the name Pratham Pankti Cauliflower Farmer Producer Company Limited. We spend a lot of time in Budhira just looking at the fields and hoping the pests stay away. It is not like we have a big strategy or anything corporate like that. We just want to make sure the cauliflower we grow gets a fair price when it goes to the market. We meet up when we can, usually after the day’s work is done and everyone is tired. There is always someone worrying about the water supply or the cost of the bags for packing. We don't have a receptionist or a big glass building. It’s just a room with some old ledgers and a lot of mud on the floor from everyone’s boots. Being a farmer is never easy, but doing it this way feels a bit more solid. We learn from each other about what works and what doesn't. Sometimes things go wrong and we have to start over, but that’s farming for you. We just keep at it because that is what we know how to do.
