Poojs Silk Handicrafts

If you find yourself walking through the narrow lanes of Sonarpura you might stumble upon our shop at B. 8/83 in Baragambhir Singh. It is a bit of a maze around here with all the old buildings and the sound of people talking outside. At Poojs Silk Handicrafts we mostly spend our time surrounded by stacks of fabric and the smell of raw silk. The lighting inside isn't always the brightest but we know where everything is kept. My family has lived around this part of the city for a long time and we just sort of ended up doing this work because it was what everyone knew. We have these old wooden shelves that are sagging a bit under the weight of the inventory but they hold up okay. People stop by sometimes just to chat or ask for directions and we don't mind that at all. It is a small space so things can get a little cramped when we get a new shipment in from the weavers. We spend hours sorting through different colors and checking for any loose threads or mistakes in the patterns. It is not a flashy showroom with air conditioning or glass displays but it feels like home to us. We just keep our heads down and keep the business running one day at a time while the city carries on outside our door. Sometimes we drink tea on the front step and watch the cows walk by.
