Handloom Handicraft Center

We run the Handloom Handicraft Center from our location at A-32/48 in Chhittanpura. This part of town has a long history of people working with cloth and thread. Our space is not like a modern retail store at all. It is more of a traditional workspace where you can see the actual looms and the piles of yarn waiting to be used. The air always smells like raw cotton and the dyes we use for the fabrics. It gets quite dusty, so we have to sweep the floor several times a day to keep the finished goods from getting dirty. We spend a lot of our time checking the patterns and making sure the weave is right. It is slow work that can really tire out your eyes after a few hours. Neighbors often stop by just to say hello or to see what kind of patterns we are working on this week. We don't have a large display window for people to look in. Instead, we just have stacks of finished cloth ready to be sent out. It is mostly a family operation, with different people helping out whenever they can. The building is old and the rooms are small, but it is where we do everything. In the heat of the afternoon, it can get very stuffy inside, so we usually take a break until it cools down a bit.
