About Mughal Carpets Industries – Art & Craft in Varanasi
Our place is right on the Main Road, near Azimullah Chauraha. It’s a very loud spot because of all the rickshaws and trucks passing by all day long. If you stand outside, you can hear the horns constantly. We have been working out of this location for quite a while now. Inside, it’s a different world though. We have heaps of carpets everywhere you look. Some are still being finished and others are ready to go. The air always smells a bit like raw wool and dye. We don't have a fancy showroom with bright lights. It is more of a working space where things get done. We spend a lot of time checking the knots and making sure the edges are straight. My hands are usually a bit rough from handling the material all day. We eat our lunch together in the back office when there is a break in the traffic. It’s a family-run thing, mostly. We don’t use those big computers for everything; a lot of our notes are just written down in paper ledgers. The floor is concrete and we have a few old chairs for guests. It’s a honest way to spend the day. When the sun starts to set, the light hits the intersection in a funny way, and that is usually when we start packing things up. We are just local people making carpets on a busy corner and trying to do it right.
