Smeet Engineering Company

Our shop, Smeet Engineering Company, is tucked into the H. P. Engineering Work building at 317/3 in the Forty Shed Area of Vapi G.I.D.C. It’s a big industrial zone, so there are sheds everywhere you look. Ours is just one of many, but we stay pretty busy with our own projects. We do a lot of mechanical work and fabrication. The space is filled with welding machines, grinders, and piles of raw steel. It’s a bit cramped sometimes when we have a big project going on, but we manage to move things around to make room. The noise in the Forty Shed Area is constant, so you get used to the background hum of the G.I.D.C. quite quickly. We don't spend much money on decorations or anything like that. We just have our tools and our workbenches. Most of the guys here wear work boots and overalls that have seen better days. We start our shift and work through until the sun goes down, sometimes later if a job is urgent. It’s a practical place for practical people. We don't talk much about business strategy; we just look at the drawings and get to work. It’s been like this for a long time. We know the other people in the neighboring sheds, and we help each other out with tools now and then when something breaks. It is a tight-knit community of workers here in Vapi.
