Sarvoday High School

Sarvoday High School in Segva, Valsad. It's a quiet part of the district. The school is a simple building that has been here for a long time. We don’t have any grand gates or big signs. Students come from the nearby villages and farms. Most of them walk or ride their bikes on the narrow roads. In Segva, things move a bit slower than in the big cities like Vapi. We start early when the air is still cool and pleasant. The classrooms have big windows to let the air in, but sometimes the birds fly in and sit on the rafters. We have to shoo them out before we can start the lesson. Our desks are old wooden ones that have been polished by use. Some have names carved into them from students who were here twenty years ago. We try to keep the place tidy, but with so many kids, there’s always a bit of mud on the floor during the monsoon. Valsad gets a lot of heavy rain. The roof drips in one or two spots near the back, but we just move the benches out of the way. It’s a high school, so the kids are teenagers. They talk a lot about cricket and movies when they think we aren't listening. The staff here is small and we all know each other well. We eat our lunch together in the afternoons. It’s not a fancy life, but it’s our job. We handle the paperwork and the exams. Sometimes the power goes out, and we just continue the lesson using the light from the windows.
