Prakash Steelage Ltd. is located at 147, Gidc Colony in Umbergaon. This part of the industrial estate is always humming with activity. We work with stainless steel, mostly pipes and tubes. The coastal air in Umbergaon means we have to be extra careful about how we store our materials so they stay in good condition. Our unit is a standard industrial shed with high ceilings and heavy racks to hold the steel stock. Moving these long pipes around requires a lot of coordination and a steady hand on the crane. We are not a very big team, so everyone ends up helping with everything from loading trucks to checking the inventory lists. The office is just a corner of the main floor partitioned off with some plywood and glass. It gets noisy when the cutting saws are running, so we usually have to shout a bit to be heard on the phone. We eat our lunch together in a small shaded area outside when the weather allows it. Most of our staff have been here for a decade or more. We don't do much in the way of selling ourselves; we just keep a good stock of steel and wait for the regular buyers to call. It is honest work and the days go by pretty fast when we are busy with a big order.
