Mauryan High School sits out on Ajwa Nimeta Road in the Waghodia area of Vadodara. It is a bit further out from the main city buzz, which is actually kind of nice. You get a bit more fresh air out here. The road can be a little bumpy, but it leads right to our gate. We have a decent-sized building and some open space around it. Most of my day is spent making sure the staff has what they need and that the school grounds are looking okay. We don't have a team of decorators; we just put up some charts and drawings that the kids made. It feels real and lived-in. There is always a pile of notebooks somewhere waiting to be moved, and the sound of bells ringing marks the time for us. We don’t have a big mission statement on the wall or anything like that. We just know that the doors need to be open by a certain time and the lessons need to happen. If the roof leaks during the monsoon, we find a way to fix it. It’s a practical way of living. We talk to the parents in plain English or the local language, whatever works best. It is just a group of us trying to run a decent school without making too much of a fuss about it. We stay busy, and the years seem to go by pretty fast.
