J\'s Couture

Our workshop is at G F-5 Purusharth Avenue, right near the Hdfc Bank by the Radha Krishana Cross Road in Akota. It’s a decent spot in Vadodara. We do couture work, which basically means we spend a lot of time staring at fabric and trying to figure out how to put it together. It’s not as glamorous as it sounds. Most of the time, the floor is covered in scraps of thread and pins that we keep stepping on. We have a small space on the ground floor. The big window lets in some light, but we mostly rely on the overhead tubes to see what we are doing. Being near the bank means there are always people around, but once you step inside, it’s mostly just the sound of the iron steaming or someone clipping fabric with scissors. We don’t have a big sales team. If you come in, you’re probably going to talk to the same person who is actually doing the sewing. We get our materials from various places and try to keep things moving. Sometimes a design doesn't work out the first time, so we have to rip out the seams and start over. It’s frustrating, but that’s the job. We don’t have any polished speeches about what we do. We just work on one piece at a time until it looks right and is ready to be picked up.
