If you go to the Ghatiya area of Ujjain, you will find a small place called Badvai. That is where Manikarn Farmers Producer Companylimited is based, specifically at House 21 in the Nalwa area. Ujjain is a holy city and people come from everywhere to visit the temples, but out in Badvai, it is all about the soil. We are a collective of farmers who live in and around this village. Our office is just a regular house where we gather to talk about the business of farming. It is a modest setup with a few benches and a table that has seen better days. We don't have any fancy mission statements or corporate goals. Our main focus is just making sure the people in Nalwa can get their crops to the market and maybe get a better price than they would on their own. The work is hard and the days are long, especially when it’s time to harvest. You can hear the tractors humming in the fields from sunrise to sunset. We spend a lot of time drinking chai and debating which seeds to buy for the next season. It’s a community effort, and everyone in the village has a say in how things are done. We aren’t looking to become a giant company; we just want to look after our own corner of Ujjain and the people who live here.
