Surat Transformer is based out in GIDC Sachin 39, which is right in the middle of all the industrial noise and smoke. We deal with heavy stuff here, mostly repairing old units that have burnt out or need the oil changed. The floor is made of concrete and it usually has some dark patches from where the transformer oil has dripped over the years. It is a loud environment because of the machinery running nearby and the sound of metal hitting metal when we open up a casing. We have got stacks of copper wire and different gaskets sitting on the workbenches. Most of the guys here have grease on their shirts by ten in the morning, and the smell of hot metal is pretty much always in the air. We do not have a fancy office or anything like that, just a small desk in the corner with a pile of old logbooks and some spare fuses. People from the nearby factories bring their equipment over when something fails, and we just get to work on it. It is physical labor, moving those heavy cores around with the chain hoist. Sometimes the heat in Sachin gets a bit much, especially inside a tin-roof building, but we just keep the big pedestal fans running. It is a straightforward operation where we focus on the mechanical side of things without any extra fuss or polish to the place.
