Super Battery Works

At Super Battery Works in Umarkui, the days start early because that’s when people realize their car or bike won't start. We are on 2nd Main, right near Kausthubam. The shop smells like old lead and plastic, which I don't even notice anymore. I have rows of heavy black batteries on the floor and a charging station in the back that hums all day long. My hands are usually a bit stained from the grease and the terminals. I have an old wooden desk where I keep the ledgers and a few basic tools like wrenches and voltmeters. Sometimes the rain comes down hard and we have to move everything back from the doorway so it stays dry. People stop by on their way to work, looking worried about their commute, and I just tell them to give me a few minutes to check the voltage. The shelves are reinforced because batteries are surprisingly heavy when you stack them up. I’ve got a small radio that plays the local news, but mostly it’s just the sound of the charger humming. It’s a steady kind of job, nothing fancy about it. I usually eat my lunch sitting on a plastic crate in the back. By the end of the day, my back is a bit sore from lifting, but that’s just part of the work in a place like this.
