We deal with all kinds of batteries, mostly for vehicles but some for other things too. The shelves are reinforced because the stock is so heavy. There is a specific smell here, a mix of metal and chemicals, that stays in your clothes. We have some testing equipment on the main bench to see if a battery can still hold a charge or if it’s completely dead. The floor is stained in a few places from old spills, but we try to keep it as clean as possible. We use a trolley to move the bigger units around so we don't hurt our backs. The shop is right near the bunder, so we get a bit of a breeze sometimes, which helps with the heat. We have a big ledger where we write down the warranties and the dates. It’s a lot of physical work, lifting and carrying, and our hands are usually a bit dirty by the end of the shift. We have a small sink in the back to wash up before we go home. Customers usually come in when their car won't start, so they are often in a bit of a hurry. We just get on with it and try to help them get back on the road. It’s just how it goes here.
