Down in Chikhali 4, Surat, you’ll find Kathan Auto Electricals. We are mostly covered in grease and dust for the better part of the day. Our shop is where we handle anything with wires or batteries for cars and bikes. It’s not a clean environment. There are old alternators and starters sitting on the workbenches and wires hanging from the walls. We don’t have an office staff to answer the phones, so if we’re under a car, we might miss a call. We just do the work as it comes in. Most of our customers are locals from the Derualandard area who have known us for years. They bring their vehicles when something stops working, and we poke around until we find the short circuit. It takes patience and a lot of testing. We don't have expensive diagnostic machines; we mostly rely on what we’ve learned over time. The shop gets pretty loud when the traffic is heavy outside, but we just keep our heads down and focus on the task. We aren't trying to be the biggest shop in Surat. We just want to fix what’s broken so people can get back on the road. It’s a dirty job, but someone has to do it, and we happen to be good at it. We close up when the light gets too low to see the small wires anymore. Usually, we take a few minutes at the end of the day to clean our tools and sweep the floor.
