Jay Bhawani General Store

We have been here on Althan Chimbai Road for quite some time now. Being right near Andrew Church means we see a lot of people passing by on Sundays especially. The shop is small but it holds a lot of things. We usually start the day early, around seven, to get everything ready before the first lot of customers comes in. It is mostly people looking for milk or bread or maybe some cigarettes. The shelves are packed tight because we try to have a bit of everything that people might run out of at home. Sometimes it is hard to find where we put the smaller items like buttons or safety pins. The fan in the corner makes a bit of a clicking noise but it keeps us cool enough when the afternoon sun hits the front of the shop. We spend a lot of time just sweeping the floor because the road outside gets really dusty with all the cars and bikes going past. It is a bit loud sometimes. We know most of the people who live around here by their first names. They come in and tell us about their day while we bag up their sugar or flour. We don’t have fancy machines, just a simple counter and some old notebooks to keep track of what we need to buy from the market. It can get tiring standing all day but that is just how it is. By the time we close up, we are usually ready for a sit-down.
