Running Oakman Holidays out here in Kupwara is a bit of a challenge sometimes, especially with how the mountain weather changes without much warning. We spend a lot of our time on the phone or sitting at the desk trying to make sure all the travel plans for people actually work out. It’s a local operation, so it’s mostly us handling everything from start to finish. We aren't a big agency with hundreds of employees, just a few of us who know these roads and the local spots better than anyone else. Most mornings start with a cup of tea and checking if the mountain passes are clear or if some guest needs a change in their itinerary. People come to us because they want to see the real side of this place, and we just tell them how it is without any sugar coating. If a road is rough or a hotel is just basic, we say so. It’s more honest that way. The office isn't anything special to look at, just a place where we keep our files and meet up with drivers. We’ve had some long days when a group gets stuck or a booking goes sideways, but that’s just the nature of the travel business in this part of the world. It’s not always easy, but seeing someone really enjoy their holiday makes the headaches worth it. We just keep doing our thing day by day, hoping the tourists keep coming to see what Kupwara has to offer.
