Our place is at 197, Block 1, in the Sri Malayandi Pillai Thottam area. It’s right by the Kandampatti Bypass in Salem. If you know the bypass, you know how the trucks are always roaring past at all hours. It creates a constant background hum that you eventually stop hearing. We have a yard where we keep the steel, and it’s a big, open space that gets very hot under the Tamil Nadu sun. We spend most of our time outside, checking the bundles and making sure the crane is working like it should. Our office is just a small block where we keep the computer and the records. It’s usually dusty because of all the movement in the yard. We have a couple of dogs that hang around the gate and sleep in the shade of the trucks. Srs Ispatt Pvt. Ltd. is basically a place where we move heavy things from one pile to another and then onto a vehicle. The guys here are mostly local, and we speak a mix of Tamil and whatever else works to get the point across. We don't wear suits; we wear sturdy shirts and boots that can handle the metal scraps. It’s a gritty job and by five o'clock, we are all ready for a cold drink and a rest. We just keep our heads down and handle the steel as it comes in.
