Balaji Rice Mill

At number 8 in Maruthapatti you will find our rice mill. It’s located in the Manjundan Nagar area and you can usually hear the machines running from a little ways down the street. The air around the building often has that distinct smell of husks and grain which is something we have grown very accustomed to. We spend most of our hours here dealing with the bags of paddy that come in and the finished rice that goes out. It is a dusty kind of job and the floor is always covered in a thin layer of fine powder from the milling process. We have a few big machines that take up most of the space and they make a lot of noise so we have to speak up when we are talking to each other. The trucks back into the loading area regularly and there is always a bit of a rush to get things moved. It isn't the kind of place with a nice front desk or anything like that. We mostly just have a small corner with a table where we keep track of the bags and the weights. The people who work here are local folks who know how to handle the heavy sacks without complaining much. We just keep the rollers turning and the bags moving day after day. It’s hard work but it is what we know how to do best here in Maruthapatti.
